A. Bogatsky, “The Fundamentals of Go. A Comprehensive Go Textbook in Problems and Solutions. Volume 2. (From 25 to 18 kyu)”. In two parts, 366 pages, about 1200 problems. An excellent self-study Go book for players beyond the beginner stage.
The book consists of 2 parts. It contains 366 pages and about 2400 diagrams.
To work through this book, you only need to know the rules of Go. A little practical playing experience is helpful, but not essential.
The book follows the same structure as volume 1: it contains 17 lessons with a great many problems and very little theoretical material. Another 1181 simple problems, which gradually become more difficult, will help readers climb a few more steps towards master level.
Professional Go teachers advise beginners against reading books on Go theory. By and large, this is sound advice. First, you need to play as much as possible and learn the fundamentals of technique through practice. But this advice does not apply to our book. There is very little theory here. And working through the book is much like playing a game: readers are presented with a variety of problems to solve.
Many lessons continue the corresponding lessons from volume 1, but at a more advanced level. The problems become more difficult and varied. Two lessons (№3 and №6) cover ko fighting, the most difficult element of Go technique. Quite a few problems in this volume focus on the opening (Lessons №1, 14 and 15). The final chapter, as in the first volume, is about yose.
By the time you turn the last page of this book, you will have significantly strengthened and broadened your repertoire of techniques and now tactics as well.
The book’s cover promises you a level of 18 kyu. You really will play at this strength, and perhaps even higher, if you work through, or better yet, solve all the problems on your own, and put what you have learned into practice by playing a hundred or two hundred games on a full-sized board (19×19).
Almost all the problems used in the book were taken from Korean collections of tests for beginners published by Hanguk Kiwon, the Korea Baduk Association.
