Preface to Volume 3
If you play at 15-20 kyu or have mastered Volume 2 of the textbook, in which case we have no doubt that your playing strength is at least 17-18 kyu, then this book is for you.
The more you know, the more you realize how little you know. The same is true in Go: new knowledge raises more questions, and we try to answer them. This, the 3rd volume of the multivolume textbook “Fundamentals of Go”, could no longer fit under one cover, so we divided it into two parts.
This book is devoted to playing technique. Part 2 will cover Go strategy.
The book follows almost the same structure as Volumes 1 and 2: Part 1 contains 5 lessons consisting entirely of problems on various topics. Another 990 problems, some easy and others less so, will help readers climb a few more steps toward dan level.
All the lessons continue the corresponding lessons from Volume 2, but at a higher level. The largest lesson, Lesson 1, consists of 420 life and death problems. In Lesson 2 you will find 60 problems on ko fighting, and in Lesson 3, 30 on creating seki. Lesson 4 covers determining the status of groups, with another 60 problems. A collection of 360 capturing race problems rounds off Part 1 of Volume 3.
