Fujisawa Shuko “Handbook of Tesuji Fundamentals”
Volume 1, Tesuji for Attack
260 pp.
Tesuji are moves that make the most effective use of the stones on the board. As typical techniques for close combat, tesuji play a critical role in all aspects of the game, from the opening stage to the late endgame.
In this famous handbook, translated into Russian in 4 volumes, Fujisawa presents a systematic overview of key tesuji, arranging them according to the purposes they serve.
This first volume examines tesuji used in attack, including such aims as creating weaknesses, separating stones, destroying the opponent’s shape, creating a ko, and depriving the opponent of a base.
The other three volumes are devoted to tesuji used in defense, in the opening, in capturing races, and in the endgame. In all these situations, tesuji are an integral part of fighting, and knowing them is essential to improving one’s play. Fujisawa also notes that tesuji are part of what makes Go an elegant and captivating game, thus contributing to the beauty of Go.
