The Endgame (Yose)
Tomoko Ogawa, James Davies
Series: Elementary Go Series
Format 60×84/16, 162 pp.
Russian translation: Alexander Naumenko
First Russian edition: April 2006
First English edition: September 1976
In this book we have tried to do two things: explain the basic moves and principles of the endgame; and show how they apply in situations from actual play. Go is an intellectual pursuit, so we assume that you will want to think through the problems discussed as much as possible on your own, rather than simply take our word for it that such-and-such a move is correct. Accordingly, more than half of the following pages are devoted to problems. Working through them may require some patience, but should make you a considerably stronger player.
The principal authors of the five chapters are:
Chapter 1 Ogawa
Chapter 2 Davies
Chapter 3 Davies
Chapter 4 Ogawa
Chapter 5 Ogawa
However, we consulted each other while writing this book. One of us (Davies) drafted the book as a whole, and the other (Ogawa) checked all the diagrams.
We thank the Nihon Ki-in for providing facilities while we were writing this book, and James Kerwin, who edited the manuscript and suggested many improvements.
