Fujisawa Shuko “Handbook of Tesuji Fundamentals”
volume 2, Tesuji for Defense
268 pp.
Tesuji are moves that make the most effective use of the stones already on the board. As typical techniques for close combat, tesuji play a critical role in every aspect of the game, from the opening stage to late yose.
In this celebrated handbook, translated into Russian in 4 volumes, Fujisawa presents a systematic overview of key tesuji, arranging them according to the purposes they serve.
This book is divided into four volumes. The first two contain tesuji for fighting (the generally accepted meaning of the word today), while the other two discuss tesuji for fuseki, capturing races, and yose. The first two volumes are devoted to tesuji for attack, volume 1, and tesuji for defense, volume 2, and each of these volumes is divided into 11 chapters presenting different objectives in the game. I have tried to arrange the material so that the book can be used either as a tesuji textbook or as a collection of problems for testing your knowledge. I leave it to the reader to decide which way of using the book will set them on the path to the innermost secrets of Go.
