Afterword
So, in Chapters 2 and 3, we examined a total of 27 thematic diagrams. At the risk of repeating myself, I want to remind you that all the material was taken from professional games, so the standard is high and you should not expect to understand everything straight away.
The topics covered included: using forcing moves in sabaki and in building living shapes; kikashi involving stone sacrifices; determining the order and timing of sequences of kikashi, and so on and so forth. I hope that at least some of the moves impressed you with their efficiency. If so, you have become stronger through the understanding you have gained. When similar positions arise in your games, you will be able to find moves with added efficiency.
Of course, winning a game after capturing a group is very satisfying, but I hope that after reading this book you will also enjoy simply making your stones work to their full potential. Stones working at 100% naturally look more attractive than those that are barely doing their job.
In Chapter 3, I included positions from classical games that have become famous, in particular Shuei’s move extending his dead stones (Theme 4), Dosaku’s nose tesuji (Theme 5), and Shusaku’s peep (Theme 15). They deserve to be called magical moves, worthy of admiration in their own right, but it will be especially valuable if they also inspire you to do something similar in your own games.
If reading this book has opened your eyes to new possibilities, even in the smallest way, I will be happy.
